Play this game to save dogs

Scully and Dovi are in bed...enjoying warm blankets and dreams of doggie biscuits. They're very much loved...

Unfortunately, there are millions of dogs and cats, roly-poly puppies and fluffy kittens who don't have a home...who may be euthanized tomorrow...because they are unwanted. It's a travesty...

Please help save homeless shelter cats and dogs by playing a simple trivia game. Each correct answer sends food to shelters to help save innocent pet lives. Play to Save Dogs

Scully, Dovi and Whiskers thank you...so do the beautiful, loving animals you'll save...

Guardians Magazine - Quarterly Magazine of In Defense of Animals

Guardians Magazine - Quarterly Magazine of In Defense of Animals

Enjoying the Autumn and Our 10 Year Anniversary.

Well, after a great summer, Scully is having a BLAST this Fall! He's enjoying walks in his favorite park- sniffing through leaves, barking at geese and birds...being otherwise his charming self.

As a wonderful note, we celebrated 10 years together, yesterday, November 15th, 2009. Of course, I was teary-eyed, remembering the first time I saw him at the Animal Shelter in Warren. He was so tiny and shy....so emaciated but sweet. When I gently placed him in the front seat next me, he sat there as if he'd always been there. It was beautiful, the ride home...he fell asleep in the sun- Goodness knows I have DOZENS of photos of him just sleeping in the sun...He never wanted to leave my side...We'll discuss separation anxiety in another post! ;)

He's barking at me as I write this, so I'll close and go play with him...isn't that what it's all about- enjoying the moments as they happen?

"He's Okay...He's Okay...He doesn't bite"

"He's okay.....he's okay..." the nice lady shouted to me as her large dog came running right for Scully...
You see, she pulled up to where we were in the park. I had Scully on his little leash and he was happily smelling everything he could and marking every signpost we could get to. The lady saw us as we walked by her car. She opened the back hatch of her SUV but held her dogs until we walked what she thought would be "far enough" away.

We were at one of Scully's favorite signs when all of a sudden he jerked his head and began growling...I looked where he was looking and, to my horror, this huge dog was running off his leash and straight for Scully...with the lady shouting, "He's okay...he's okay...He won't bite." As I screamed back to her "You don't understand...please get your dog...you don't understand...", I bent down to get Scully but got tangled in his leash. As I picked him up, I lost my balance and fell over...the large dog was jumping on me, trying to get to him and I fell, dropping him out of my arms...Scully screamed as he landed and rolled. I twisted my back trying not to land on him...the lady grabbed her dog- she'd managed to get the other dog back in the car and kept telling me her dog wouldn't bite...Ofcourse I had blood all over me...She kept holding her dog back as he tried to get to Scully...Scully was turning and scratching me, trying to get to her dog...

The whole point of this story...is that though I wasn't sure about the biting, big dogs DO like to PLAY with little dogs...They think they're puppies so they roll them around and cause damage to their little backs...spines....discs...With Scully's past back problems I was TERRIFIED that he'd be paralyzed...which would lead me to consider the horrible decision no pet guardian ever wants to make...

So...Large Dog people who are reading this...please don't be offended....I love your dogs...As far as i'm concerned all dogs are wonderful. It's humans who turn a dog bad. Scully probably loves your dogs and would love to play...but he's probably a lot older than your playful big guy...so please...keep the leash by your side and don't let your big dogs play with the little guys, even though they're cute and it seems like no harm done...'cause down the road...the little guys will more than likely pay for it...and end up down a road no one wants to take.

And I'm not angry at the lady...she was very nice and concerned for me. She just didn't know there's a big difference between "big dog play" and "little dog play." and Scully is as happy as a clam!

Wow...Can't Believe It's Been So Long!

Hopefully you all had a great Fourth of July. We did.

Now...does anyone else have a dog who barks at airplanes to make sure they don't
land on the house? Well...Scully is an EXPERT at it! LOL

He runs to the edge of the property every time he hears a plane and barks at it- even if he can't see it. His hair stands up along the middle of his back like a little stripe and he barks and barks. Naturally, the plane flies away and he watches and listens to make sure it's gone...and gets in one last bark- as if to say.. " and don't come back!!" He scratches the ground all proud of himself and trots about his business...checking out new smells, etc.

I have to say, proudly, we've never had a plane land on the roof, thanks to Ever-Vigilant Scully Boy!

This Must Be Addressed...from the ASPCA

I subscribe to the ASPCA newsletter and was so sickened, appalled, disgusted, infuriated that I had to post this...not to bitch about my feelings about this but to spread the word...you'll see why...

A 17 yr old girl from the Bronx was mad at her ex-roommate so she broke into her apartment, trashed the apartment and put her ex-roommate's KITTEN IN A HOT OVEN AND BURNED HER TO DEATH!! Neighbors COMPLAINED OF SMOKE COMING FROM THE APARTMENT...Firefighters found the remains of the dead kitten still cooking in the oven...The girl, Cheyenne Cherry admits to doing it because she hates cats!
READ THE ARTICLE HERE and FOLLOW THE LINK THAT GIVES YOU A LIST OF THINGS YOU CAN DO TO INTERVENE IF A CHILD OR TEEN IS ABUSING AN ANIMAL.
http://www.aspca.org/news/national/06-12-09.html#1
There is another organization called American Humane ...go there and read about the link between child abuse and animal cruelty...it's sickening but important to learn about.

I'm sorry this isn't a cute, fun post this evening about our hero, Scully...however, I've always suspected that in his early months, he was abused in horrific ways...I suspect this through his reactions to everyday things...

Please report any signs of animal or child abuse...They are counting on us to help...
I just can't write anymore. My heart and prayers go out to the poor girl who lost her beloved in such a cruel, heinous way.

First Ice Cream of the Summer!

When I was a little girl, the much-awaited bell of the ice-cream truck used to ring through the sultry air on those hot summer evenings...It was always after supper, so an ice cream or frozen lemonade or a popsicle would be the ULTIMATE ending to a fun day.

There were little ice cream cups called Hoodsies, too...Vanilla ice cream and a wooden sppon that was really a spoon at all, but a flat spoon-shaped piece of wood...It was AWESOME! I found them at the grocery store the other day and had to buy a bag of eight.

Apparently, dogs love ice cream, too. Short, little Corgi-Chihuahuas especially. It would've been an adorable photo but my batteries were dead....Yes, there was Our Boy, Scully, licking the inside of the empty cup. Ever-so-gently, he carefully got every drop of vanilla ice cream that was left...He made that last almost 10 minutes! There was NOTHING in the cup when he started- or so I thought.

It looks like we're off to a fantastic summer...:::watching Scully lick the rest of the ice cream taste from his mouth.::: By the way, he's also waiting for pizza now....
